Bradley MacMath's current work is a visual response to time spent as a tourist in Tokyo, Japan. With these paintings he has attempted to capture the layered feel of the city and its overwhelming appearance by using a range of painting techniques. In creating these pieces Bradley hopes to give the viewer an idea of Tokyo as an outsider, but also a view of Tokyo from his personal perspective. Bradley Macmath spent some time in Tokyo in 2007 which inspired him to produce new work in response to it. He has a vast collection of sketches, photographs, toys and magazines from the city which he uses when creating his pieces to incorporate parts of his personal memories from being in that place. Brad trys to make the pieces have this feel of multiple different elements combining to create something new, much like the structural makeup of the city itself.
'Recently I have been studying the collectibles culture, centred around computer games and animation merchandise which is very popular in Japan and is something which saturates the media. I feel that this is an important part of what makes Tokyo what it is and so I have incorporated the same ideology into my current series of paintings. These pieces take the city and turn it back into a part of the collectibles culture itself, by doing this I hope to give other people a glimpse of aspects of the Japanese culture which have fascinated me so much during my time there '
