My current work is a visual response to time spent as a tourist in Tokyo, Japan. With these paintings I have tried to capture the layered feel of the city and its overwhelming appearance by using a range of painting techniques. In creating these pieces I hope to give the viewer an idea of Tokyo as an outsider, but also a view of Tokyo from my personal perspective. I spent some time in Tokyo in 2007 which inspired me to produce some new work in response to it. I have a vast collection of sketches, photographs, toys and magazines from the city which I use when creating my pieces to incorporate parts of my personal memories from being in that place. I try to make the pieces have this feel of multiple different elements combining to create something new, much like the structural makeup of the city itself. Recently I have been studying the collectibles culture, centred around computer games and animation merchandise which is very popular in Japan and is something which saturates the media. I feel that this is an important part of what makes Tokyo what it is and so I have incorporated the same ideology into my current series of paintings. These pieces take the city and turn it back into a part of the collectibles culture itself, by doing this I hope to give other people a glimpse of aspects of the Japanese culture which have fascinated me so much during my time there.
