SYLVIA JI
Sylvia Ji is a master of capturing the dark side of the beautiful and the sublime. Macabre ‘Day Of The Dead’ catrinas intermingle with exotic empresses, with a regal elegance. Ji’s imagery is a visual elixir of life and death, combining sacred symbolism with mystical glamour and opulence. Influenced by historical costumery, Ji incorporates Baroque detailing such as luxurious tapestries, ornamental feathers, and gold leafing into her work for a more elaborate and decorative effect.
Ji’s work encapsulates an alluring beauty that is both cutting edge and a nod to time-honored technique. Her paintings are symbolic reflections of herself, portraits of people she knows or nameless faces set in a landscape of fleeting and decaying beauty. Possessing an artistic voice as unique as the times we live in, Ji is at once contemplative, spiritual, enigmatic, and yet whimsically funny. Above all else, it is perhaps beauty that emerges as her defining characteristic, and her art reflects this: an extension of herself; a passionate appreciation of simple aesthetic pleasure fused with intimately complex subject matter.
Sylvia Ji was born in 1982, and raised in San Francisco, California, where she received her BFA at the Academy of Art University. Upon graduation, she relocated to Los Angeles in 2005 where she currently resides. Ji’s work has been featured in numerous gallery exhibitions including White Walls, Thinkspace, Lineage Gallery, BLVD Gallery, and Art Basel’s Art Fair Now. She has been profiled in publications such as Juxtapoz, Trace, and Mesh Magazine, and her painting “Dona Dolorosa” graced the cover of the LA Weekly.

Natalie Shau constantly keeps working on her own personal artwork and exhibitions, but also enjoys creating illustrations for music bands, fashion designers and writers. BRAD MACMATH
Brad Macmath is a graffiti artist from Bristol. With the use of spray paint he creates the most magnificent cityscapes, detailed and vivid in colour. His current work is a visual response to time spent as a tourist in Tokyo, Japan. With these paintings he has managed to capture the layered feel of the city and its overwhelming appearance by using a range of painting techniques. Brad encourages his works to have this feel of multiple different elements combining to create something new, much like the structural makeup of the city itself. Recently he has been studying the collectibles culture, centred on computer games and animation merchandise which is very popular in Japan and is something which saturates the media. Brad is receiving massive commercial success all over the world paving the way for many graffiti artist but more importantly by utilizing his ‘aerosol routes’ he is now taken seriously within the art world as a master craftsman.

FINE GRIME - DEBUT AAF BRISTOL

When Will Ramsay founded the fair in 1999 his aim was to make contemporary art accessible to everyone, and to show you don’t need to be an art expert or a millionaire to enjoy and buy art. Ten years on The Affordable Art Fair is a leading showcase for contemporary art.
How did it all start?
In 1996 Will opened Will’s Art Warehouse in south west London to bridge the increasing interest in contemporary art and the London gallery scene. By concentrating on relatively unknown artists not carrying a premium for reputation, the gallery was able to offer works from £50 - £2,500 from a stable of over 150 artists. The response to Will’s Art Warehouse encouraged Will to take his approach to the next level, and in October 1999 he launched the first Affordable Art Fair in Battersea Park. 10,000 visitors took advantage of the ease of buying, breadth of choice, affordable prices and user-friendly approach.
How has AAF grown?
In 2001 Will launched a second event in Battersea Park, the Spring Collection, to showcase entirely different artists from the Autumn Collection. Now over 23,000 people come to each London fair to enjoy the art exhibited by the 120 British and international galleries. In the same year he established a fair in the West Country; AAF Bristol now takes place every May..
AAF has also become something of a global phenomenon with fairs taking place in Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels, New York and Singapore, while affiliate events include Sydney and Melbourne. Globally, 650,000 people have visited an Affordable Art Fair, buying over £100 million of art.
Is AAF continuing to grow?
We believe buying art can provide a lifetime of enjoyment and inspiration and no one should miss this opportunity. So watch out, an AAF may be coming to a city near you!
Plans are afoot to launch AAF Singapore and Milan in 2011.
